Vientiane/THAKHEK/SAVANNAKHET/DANSAVAN BORDER (Laos-Vietnam Border)

DAY 01: VIENTIANE – THAKHEK BY OVERLAND (-/L/D)

Pick up at your hotel in Vientiane and drive on road no 13 toward south Laos. Stop over to visit Pha Bat, a revered stupa by locals. Drive along rice fields and stop at Pakkading where Nam Kadding and Mekong meet. See how locals transform wood in “gold” for perfume industry. Lunch at local restaurant.  

Continue to Thakhek, mountains appear on the left, hiding forests and caves. Stop a few kilometers outside of Thakhek, a trail brings you to a natural stone wall turned into a surprising open air chapel. Legend says the wall was part of the defense of the city of Si Khotabong (6th century). Thakhek is known as a transit point for goods between Vietnam and Thailand. Visit by foot this small city nestled along the bank of the Mekong. The center still retains a particular atmosphere and charm with mixed Chinese - European buildings with the central square, the church etc. Transfer to your hotel. Dinner at local restaurant and accommodation at your hotel

 

DAY 02: THAKHEK, VISIT 2 CAVES (B/L/D)

Breakfast at your hotel. Drive of the city by going just 15 km outside of Thakhek, Laos you can see some pretty amazing caves (Nang Ean cave). The area is filled with limestone karsts that are beautiful. Then visit Buddha Cave or Tham Pa Fa in Thakhek, Laos is located on National Route 12, near Ban Nakhang Xang. The Buddha Cave is about 14 km away from Thakhek in Khammuan Province. The cave with its many Buddha images was discovered on June 2004 by a local villager by the name of Mr. Boun Nong. Mr. Nong found the cave by following a group of bats entering the cave. With his curiosity and the intention of collecting bats, he decided to climb up the 15 meters to the cave’s entrance. Unexpectedly, he discovered the cave and the 229 Buddha Statues therein. Subsequently, the cave became a sacred place for local and neighboring peoples. Lunch at local restaurant and Dinner and accommodation at your hotel.

 

DAY 03: THAKHEK – SAVANNAKHET (B/L/D)

Breakfast at your hotel. Drive to Savannakhet where the land is flat with rice fields creating beautiful mosaics during the rainy season. Stop at Ban Nateuy where underground salt is extracted with smoke from chimneys in “another world” atmosphere. Stopover a few kilometers after to visit the famous Ing Hang stupa with fine carvings. Lunch at local restaurant.

 

Arrive in Savannakhet and take a short city tour amid old colonial buildings, the beautiful church and visit the dinosaur museum (depend on the day), the former inhabitants of this province. Lunch at local restaurant. Dinner and accommodation at hotel

 

DAY 04: SAVANNAKHET-DANSAVAN BORDER (B/-/-)

Breakfast at your hotel. Transfer to the border (Laos-Vietnam Border) for your next destination.
